Engineering the Wave of Tomorrow

Surf exploration ain’t what it used to be. With technology and the ability to hop on a plane and go anywhere anytime, wave discoveries are dwindling. But what about all that coastline, which has plenty of swell, but also something in the way of making it surfable?

Enter the World Wave Project – a new initiative from surf travel expert Anthony Marcotti, environmental scientist and longtime artificial reef expert Dr. Shaw Mead, and surf scientist Ed Atkin, M.Sc. – which seeks to use technology to sculpt waves out of previously unsurfable spots. To do so, the World Wave Project is seeking to “engineer” surf spots, by altering the landscape of locations that have consistent swell and favorable winds — but an unfavorable seabed for surfing conditions…
